MOWA | DTN Panel Discussion: Artists Without Borders

Jul 17

Arc Theatre

Join us in person for a panel discussion with Milwaukee-based artists Rina Yoon, Nirmal Raja, and Jason Yi to learn about their works on display in MOWA | DTN's current exhibition, Artists Without Borders: Reflections on Art and Place. In celebration of Gallery Night MKE and the reopening of the arts in Milwaukee, this event is free and open to the public!

Seating is limited! Advance reservations are required for this event.

Artists Without Borders asks the question: what makes an artist a Wisconsin artist? Is it their birthplace...their place of residence...their subject matter? What is the relationship between art and place? How does art instill a sense of belonging and what might it reveal about our identity?

The panelists simultaneously draw artistic influence from their home countries and translate their experience as first-generation immigrants into their work. Their sensitive portrayals grapple with questions of representation and shared cultural experiences.

In Artists Without Borders, Nirmal Raja uses domestic objects common in an Indian household, and Jason Yi creates sculptural interpretations of South Korean landscapes and legends with spray foam and acrylic paint. Rina Yoon applies Korean paper-making techniques to non-traditional forms of printmaking in her work.

Q&A will follow the panel discussion.

Guests may enjoy an exclusive complimentary cocktail to celebrate Milwaukee arts!
